"Grandma's House" by Mikiala
(mo'opuna- grandchildren)
I loved going to grandma's house
Old, vintage, yet quaint
Outside rested a huge mango tree and a
tree house made specifically for the mo'opuna
Inside, jars of pickled mango
lined the kitchen sink.
More often than not, a bowl of ogo(seaweed)
lay desolate in the sink.
Creeping through the dimmed hallways,
I saw a light flickering in the distance.
The TV was on channel 12.
Grams loved watching Japanese soap operas.
It was kapu (forbidden) to change the channel.
The room never saw anything else
besides the Japanese tea sets
resting peacefully on the glass shelves.
Grams was a woman of many face
Always in an attempt to make us smile
Stories at bedtime filled our imaginations
Of a better world
Laughter couldn't have been sweeter.
Grams was amazing.
She really loved her mo'opuna.
I really miss her sometimes.
All I have are the memories, but for now
It's enough.
