"Opihi" by Trent
(opihi- limpet, a delicacy in Hawaii)

When I chew a raw opihi,
my mouth tingles
with a fresh spray of ocean mist
soothing my lips,
massaging my tongue.
The fingers that picked this opihi
knew this flesh would bring satisfaction
knew its spray of ocean mist
would entice my taste buds.
As I scoop it out of the shell,
Slurping it into my mouth
I smile and my mouth tingles
like a fresh spray of ocean mist.
The fingers that picked the opihi
knew I would devour many,
enjoying its flavor, thinking of
his many cuts and bruises
and the battle scar of hard work on his knee.
