I scanned an Eisenhower Bicentenial silver dollar and cleaned it up a little. Actually, I scanned it several times rotating it in different ways on the scanner until the light direction looked best. There's a lot of little lines in there that required a careful hand. I had a tough time deciding between huge and life-sized. I opted for the life-sized.
The carving was done mostly with a hobby knife with some longer lines being made with a gouge (Speedball #2).
