Carving - Maryland Box Gnome #1

Maryland Box Gnome #1

Actual dimensions(WxH in inches): 2.0 x 2.7 - Material: Speedball Safety-Cut - Mar2003

For my 3rd project, I decided to try some "real" carving material: Speedball Safety-Cut. I think I actually liked the erasers better. This does give a lot more surface to carve on, but it doesn't feel like I had the "precision" that I had on the erasers.

For the image, I found a gnome in a book ("Gnomes", Poorvliet/Huygen, Abrams 1977) and modified it to make a black and white graphic. I transfered the laser printer output with the acetone method and carved away. MdBxGn = Maryland Box Gnome (the stamp was intended for possible letterboxing use). On the Gnome's hat is the insignia of the Letterboxing North America organization. The thing he's posing with is a rubber stamp of the state of Maryland. The overall stamp turned out great (except his left hand, that is).
