Dave's Carving Page
|
The format of this carve is much larger than I generally work on. Currently, I'm not comfortable with my skill at cleanly printing these larger images. However, I sized this to fit on a page of the Carving Consortium's Swapzine (a limited edition bi-monthly carving "zine", which is produced totally in 1-bit black-and-white).
My photo-to-graphic preparation process is basically modifying the different areas of the photo based on both the detail and "feel" I want. Those areas are then merged together into the final graphic and transfered to the carving medium. Some images work well when taken as a small number of large areas. Others not only require numerous areas to be individually adjusted, but require manual "tweeking" to further simplify the image. I find it fascinating that a single photo can yield numerous versions of a final graphic... all with different "feels". Since people tend to be so sensitive to faces, this effect is especially apparent when I work with portraits.
